There aren’t many requirements (I think maybe a rotation in EM, plus some peds and IM exposure it’s very vague). Some of my co-residents who didn’t have it had to do an EM or Peds rotation in CA-1 year, so it’s possible.

But for what it's worth: -EM is a relatively short residency (most 3 yrs, some 4 yrs). You don't have to study for years and years to master a narrow field and become a specialist (e.g. neurosurgeons, cardiologists). (Not to take away from the fact that EM is a specialty in emergency medicine.)

Anesthesia requires a 1 year prelim/IM year while EM does not. EM can be a 3 year program, while anesthesia will be 4 years. Once your EM shift is done, you are finished for the day.
